If you are buying a new machine, or deciding whether to repair your current one, it helps to know the strengths and weaknesses of each type. We repair all three, so here is our honest view.
Front loaders
Front loaders use the least water and are gentlest on clothes. They usually heat their own water. They are more complex, so repairs can cost more, and they need regular care to avoid smells.
Top loaders
Top loaders are quick, easy to load and tough. They use more water than front loaders and can be harder on clothes, but repairs are usually simpler.
Twin tubs
Twin tubs are cheap to buy and run, cope well with irregular water supply and are simple to repair. They need more hands-on effort, as you move clothes between the tubs.
Our advice for Harare homes
- Unreliable water supply: a twin tub or top loader copes better
- Running on solar: a front loader on cold or eco programmes uses the least power
- Large families: a large-capacity top loader or front loader
- Small spaces: a compact front loader or washer dryer
Questions about this guide
Which type is the most reliable?
Twin tubs and top loaders are generally simpler and more forgiving. Quality front loaders are very reliable when looked after.
