Water supply in Harare can be unpredictable, so a machine that will not fill is not always faulty. Low municipal pressure, empty tanks or a borehole pump that has tripped will all stop a machine filling. Once you have ruled those out, the machine itself is likely at fault.
Safe checks to try first
Always switch the machine off at the wall before checking anything inside it.
- 1Check that the tap is fully open and that other taps have good pressure.
- 2Confirm your tank has water and the borehole or booster pump is running.
- 3Turn off the tap, disconnect the inlet hose and check the small mesh filter for sand or grit.
- 4Check the hose is not kinked behind the machine.
Common causes
Low water pressure
Machines need a minimum pressure to open the inlet valve properly and fill in time.
Blocked inlet filter screen
Sand and grit from municipal or borehole water block the mesh filter in the inlet.
Faulty inlet valve
The solenoid valve can burn out or stick closed.
Pressure sensor fault
A faulty sensor may tell the machine it is full when it is not.
When to call a technician
- Pressure is good but the machine still will not fill
- The machine fills continuously and overflows
- Water supply error codes such as 4C, 4E, IE, E17 or F17

Can I use my washing machine with tank water?
Yes, as long as there is enough pressure. Gravity-fed tanks need to be high enough, or you need a pressure pump. We can advise during a visit.
