A leaking washing machine can soak floors, damage kitchen cabinets and, if the leak reaches wiring, become a safety risk. Where the water appears is the best clue to what has failed.
Turn off the water supply at the tap and switch the machine off at the wall if the leak is large. Then use the checks below to narrow down the cause.
Safe checks to try first
Always switch the machine off at the wall before checking anything inside it.
- 1Check the inlet hose connection at the tap and at the back of the machine for drips.
- 2Look at the door seal for tears, folds or objects caught in it.
- 3Make sure the filter cap is screwed in tightly after cleaning.
- 4Use the correct amount of low-foam detergent. Too much soap causes overflowing foam.
Common causes
Torn door seal
Leaks from the front, usually during the wash, often come from a split or damaged door gasket.
Loose or perished hoses
Inlet and drain hoses can crack or loosen over time, especially under high water pressure.
Leaking pump or filter
Water under the front of the machine often comes from the pump seal or a loose filter cap.
Worn drum seal
Water dripping from the back or underneath can mean the drum seal has failed, often with worn bearings.
Detergent drawer overflow
A blocked drawer or low water pressure can cause water to spill from the drawer housing.
When to call a technician
- The leak is coming from inside the machine
- Water is near the plug or wiring
- The leak comes with a loud spin noise (often bearings and seal)
- You see an aqua-stop or leak error such as LC, LE or E23

Is it safe to use a leaking washing machine?
It is best not to. Water and electricity do not mix, and small leaks usually get worse. Switch off at the wall and turn off the water tap until the leak is repaired.
