Front loaders lock the door while there is water in the drum, while the drum is moving and for a short time after the cycle to let the lock cool. A door that stays locked longer than that has a reason, and forcing it can break the handle or lock.
Safe checks to try first
Always switch the machine off at the wall before checking anything inside it.
- 1Wait three to five minutes after the cycle ends. Many locks release on a timer.
- 2Check whether water is still in the drum. If so, run a drain or spin programme.
- 3Switch off at the wall for a few minutes, then switch on again.
- 4Check the child lock is not activated.
Common causes
Water still in the drum
A drainage fault keeps the safety lock engaged.
Failed door interlock
The lock mechanism or its heating element can fail in the locked position.
Broken handle or catch
A snapped internal handle mechanism stops the door opening even when the lock releases.
Control board fault
The board may not be sending the release signal.
When to call a technician
- The drum is empty but the door stays locked
- The handle moves freely but does not open the door
- You need your laundry out urgently

Frequently asked questions
Is there an emergency release on my washing machine door?
Many front loaders have an emergency release cord or tab behind the filter cover. Check your manual. Only use it once the drum is empty of water.
